Energy Communities: How to Communicate and Make an Impact at the Local Level

Energy communities are one of the most powerful tools to advance towards a just, sustainable, and people-centered energy transition. But beyond the installation of solar panels or reducing electricity bills, their true potential lies in the ability to transform the territory, generate networks of mutual support, local employment, and community resilience. And to activate that potential, communication is key.

Why is it important to communicate an energy community effectively?

Many energy communities fail in their initial phase not due to lack of technical or political will, but because of a lack of social understanding and engagement. What does it mean to be part of an energy community? What benefits does it offer? What role can I play as a neighbor?

Answering these questions is not just a matter of marketing. It is an act of pedagogy and active listening, translating a technical model into a value proposition for people’s daily lives.

Keys to effective communication at the local level
1. Speak the language of the territory

Avoid technical jargon and focus on a narrative that connects with local community values, concerns, and aspirations: savings, health, energy independence, social justice, a future for young people, etc.

2. Show real examples

There’s no better way to build trust than with familiar stories. Use videos, testimonials, and visits to local installations to show how others in the area are already benefiting from the model.

3. Create spaces for interaction

Organize workshops, open assemblies, energy cafés, fairs, or cultural events where the project can be discussed in an informal and participatory environment. Energy is a common good: it needs common spaces to flourish.

4. Collaborate with local stakeholders

Neighborhood associations, educational centers, youth or senior collectives, businesses… are key allies to reach diverse audiences. The energy community should also be a network of networks.

5. Use social media strategically

Post visual and simple content that explains the project step by step. Use short videos, reels, brief testimonials, and infographics. Respond to questions in comments or direct messages. Keep a human, empathetic, and clear tone.

Impact beyond energy

Communicating an energy community well not only helps attract participants. It also contributes to strengthening the social fabric, regaining trust in collective efforts, and advancing towards local energy sovereignty. In times of eco-social crisis, energy communities are not just a technical alternative but a cultural and political commitment to put life at the center.
