This project, co-financed by the European Union through LEADER rural development funds under the 2016 Local Development Strategy of the Altiplano de Granada Rural Development Group, and the municipalities of Cúllar, Benamaurel, and Galera, aimed to document and preserve the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) linked to the fertile floodplains—or vegas—of the Altiplano de Granada region.
In addition to identifying the knowledge and practices, the project analyzed both the benefits and threats facing these vital agro-ecosystems, laying the groundwork for future preservation efforts. Research and public engagement activities focused on recognizing the vegas as part of the region’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. These practices—especially traditional irrigation and agricultural techniques—have shaped and sustained a delicate socio-ecological balance over centuries. Special attention was given to acknowledging the historically overlooked but essential role of women in sustaining these ecosystems.
As communications coordinator, my responsibilities included direct engagement with local communities and the design of tailored outreach strategies through social media, visual materials, and other communication tools. I led campaigns to highlight local knowledge, promote participation, and build recognition of traditional practices.
Externally, I produced content for a final documentary video capturing testimonies, ancestral techniques, and the key learnings of the initiative. I also oversaw the creation and publication of a dedicated website, where all project outputs—documents, audiovisual material, and outcomes from participatory activities—remain accessible for citizens, public bodies, and other stakeholders interested in the legacy of Vegas de Conocimiento.
